Ad Hana Institute – For the Study and Documentation of Galician and Bukovina Jewry

galiciascholars@gmail.com

In the fall of 2015, a center for research and study of the Jewish heritage of Galicia and Bukovina was established at Herzog College. With an emphasis on the Torah heritage: the scholarly and spiritual nature of this heritage.
The center operates as a research center within the College, and is one of the activities of the Association for the Study of the Heritage of Galicia and Bukovina http://jgaliciabukovina.net/he.

The Center's Goals

  • Promoting professional research in the field of rabbinic and scholarly heritage on the issue of Galician and Bukovina Jewry.
  • To open the general public’s knowledge of the broad and deep heritage of Galician Jewry and its contribution to Jewish culture in recent generations and to contemporary Israeli and Jewish society.
  • To enable the processing of the intellectual potential that exists in the ultra-Orthodox society into a contribution to Jewish and Israeli society and to the research discourse that takes place in the aforementioned fields.

Admission Requirements

The center’s first cohort consists of a group of researchers with broad knowledge and proven talent, members of the ultra-Orthodox community, whose level of familiarity with the heritage of rabbinic and Torah creativity is deep and broad.

The Center's Program

In the first stage, the research will focus on rabbinic and Torah literature and history, in the broad sense of the profession, and in the second stage, research will also be added to the broad literary and cultural work. The research activity is accompanied by various continuing education courses taught by rotating lecturers from various academic fields. This group of researchers will consolidate its abilities for academic contribution – within the Haredi community and for the general research discourse – with the help of academic training in defined fields: literacy and library systems, historical thinking and the study of history, academic writing and publishing, and of course systematic engagement with the history of the Jews of Galicia and Bukovina between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries. All of these promote the analytical abilities, scientific research, and academic writing of the group members, and develop the thought processes and research products.
