Genesis legend

Midrash Aggad Bereishit – Synopsis

Midrash Agdat Bereshit is a midrash on the book of Genesis, with a unique structure.  It includes twenty-eight units, each of which consists of three chapters:  Parik Torah – on a verse from Bereshit,  Parik Nevi’im – on a verse from the Prophets, and Parik Ketubim – on a verse from the Psalms.  This division reflects the reading of the Torah on Shabbat morning, the Haftarah that follows, and the reading of Parik Ketubim at the Shabbat meal. This midrash branches out from the Tanhumite literature and was probably created in the ninth century in southern Italy.
